Baby Wicky - Female Saddleback Tamarind

History Wicky was left on New Years Eve by a little girl from nearby Padrecocha. Her brothers had killed the parent who had been carrying her and the child had nowhere else to take her before she died of starvation or shock.

Biography  Wicky stayed inside our house for the first  weeks because she needed food evey 3 hours. She is doing very well, now she's outside and has 2 stepmothers. Tony the pickpocket and Zecke the female Sakimonkey take turns in carrying Wicky around and teaching her what to eat, how to climb and where to make mischief.

Igor - Our little Red Howler Monkey

History  Igor was brought to the Animal Orphanage in December 2005 by a fisherman who had killed and eaten his mother.

Biography  Igor is like a brother to little Argus, also rescued here. Both are very calm monkeys, probabaly due to their almost 100% leaf diet. About 6 weeks ago Igor had an accident and got an 8cm long stick stuck in his breast. I had to pull it out,and although Robler held Igor, it hurt him so much that he bit through 2 of my fingernails! These monkeys are like our own children, so affectionate and attentive, and we love them very much.

Tony Piranha - White Capuchin

History  Tony is our little pick-pocket. She was left by a Hungarian tourist who rescued her from street children who had seen a similar monkey thrown into the town garbage dump. She was very sick - we weren't sure that she would survive.

Special abilities  We normally don't take Cappuchins because they're very intelligent and cheeky. Tony is lovely but very naughty. She has been trained to steal and since we've had her we have to tell all our visitors to take good care of their pockets, bags etc because Tony is very fast. Her best trick is to hop on your neck and kiss you at the same time as investigating all your pockets.

Biography  We call her Tony (Robler calls her Tony Piranha because Piranhas are what street children who are little robbers are called!). She's very kind to the baby monkeys and loves carrying Wicky around.

Chavo - Red-faced Huacary

History  Chavo came to the Orphange in terrible distress with a broken leg (which has made his leg twisted and deformed his little foot), bullet wounds and trauma after his mother was murdered by hunters with him on her back.

Biography  This species are extremely delicate when they are babies so we are blessed that Chavo made it. These days he likes to mother new babies - it's really amazing that he, who is always very jealous with his food, lets the baby monkeys eat with him and even opens fruit for them.

Facts  Chavo's species are mostly seed eaters. Because we don't have the trees he would naturally feed we buy him the nuts he needs.

Hansel & Gretel - Pygmy Marmoset Twins

History  These twin marmosets, Hansel and Gretel, were so tiny when they arrived we had to keep them inside very carefully, afraid the other monkeys would play with them and then throw him away. Tiny monkeys love to cling to the bigger ones, but just like any bigger brothers and sisters, can get a rough time when their adopted sibling gets bored!

Biography  The little twins were rescued after their mother was killed and a local villager was starving them. We hand raised them and released them, they now live on the land at the Orphange and may have families of their own, still using our safe grounds, trees and food supplies when they need them.

Facts  These are the world's smallest monkeys - and too light for my kitchen scales. They measure about 15 inches long, including a 7-inch tail and would generally reach about 4 ounces when fully grown. Their habitats are being quickly destroyed and they are a rare species to begin with.

Pauly - Red-faced Huacary

History  Pauly arrived in June 2006 weighing only 440g and needing lots of baby milk. She was brought by Shipibo woman who saved her after a hunter had killed her mother. She told me that when she took the little baby monkey away from her dead mother she thought that this was the only place where she had a chance to survive. She was probably right because Pauly was maybe 2 -.3 weeks old, her skull was still completely soft.

Biography  Our little princess has grown into a much loved part of the family. These little monkeys might not look so cute until you meet them - then you fall in love instantly, they are so much like our own little children, very personal, very loving and curious, very jealous of anybody else who might get attention and a little bit naughty too.
