Huayhuash 6am and the sun is just rising over the mountain to shed light on the opposite mountain. It´s cold but the warm springs beckon. The hike out of camp was a little hard after a day off and made no easier by the fact that it was up. Up and up and around the mountain to expose the closest glacier that I have ever even contemplated being next to. A little dangerous as we climbed on it with overhanging chunks of ice staring down at us but well worth the thrill.

Sara and Kelly were still under the weather and rode the horses and at one point got ahead of us. We had to make a decision as to which way to go – follow the donkeys and horses or touch the glacier. The remaining 5 chose to walk to the edge of the glacier and walk over the pass that way. It was really steep, non-solid rock which was a little hairy. The wind was howling and with only 1 layer of poly-thermal plus wind fleece vest, I was freezing. The sun was out though which was a bonus but it´s glase was intense.

Over the other side it was slippery shale on a very steep slope – quite fun as we almost ran down. Meadows were down the boottom of the valley with a small stream where we washed before hot soup, garlic bread and pancakes greeted us at lunch.

Another afternoon nap (nanna naps – not sure if I should be quite getting used to them yet). The sun and thought of tomorrow – possibly our hardest day – washed over our tired minds and bodies. But wait there´s hunting to be done. Went watching the 3 guys Zac, Juan Carlos and Wilfredo catch rabbits. Very funny. 3 guys scampering over a rocky mountain herding the bouncing bunnies. They came back with the bounty so whose to laugh. Bloody ingenious actually the way they did it by trapping it in a crevice in the rock. They caught 1 rabbit and said it was for dinner – only joking cos they let it go.
